Early Letters by Various Correspondents to Henry James

This website provides transcriptions of letters written to Henry James. These letters, from the Houghton Library at Harvard, have never been published before and will probably never be available in book form.

This is not a commercial site. Its primary purpose is to provide graduate students and scholars of American and English literature from around the world with a reliable and convenient alternative to using the original manuscripts. All letters have been carefully transcribed according to theories of scholarly editing.

This site serves as a complement to the forthcoming and in-progress publication of The Complete Letters of Henry James, 1855-1872, edited by Pierre A. Walker and Greg W. Zacharias.
